Do you have trees to fell on your property? Have you come across some trees that could be chopped up for firewood? If so, don’t burn it just yet. That green wood can cause many issues in your home and it will not burn as well as you’d like.
Before you truly have firewood, you need to make sure you have properly cured your firewood. This is also called seasoning, but it is simply letting the wood sit and dry out long enough that it is fine to burn. Even if you’re purchasing firewood from someone else, you should always be careful to look for dry firewood.
While you can let logs sit for a long time in a dry place to dry out, it’s usually faster and easier if you split them first. This means you’ll have to cut it into decent sized pieces of log, then cut those lengthwise to get several pieces out of each chunk. These will be your firewood.
To make the entire process simpler, you may wish to invest in a wood splitter, a machine that will do the hard work for you. However, cutting wood with an axe is a good workout, too.
Once the wood has all been split, you will need to stack it properly to ensure your wood dries evenly. There should be airflow around it, which can be difficult to achieve if you’re simply piling it up in one big stack.
First, you’ll want a rack for your firewood. There are many of these on the market, but if you like, you can use concrete blocks with a couple of 2x4s laid over them to create a lifted area to stack the wood on.
Now, place the first row of firewood parallel to each other, facing the front of the rack. The next row can be set across that row. Continue to stack this way, leaving a little space between each piece. This way, the air can still flow over and through the wood pile. Over time, this will help the wood dry out.
You want the wood to be as dry as possible, since it won’t heat well if it has too much moisture inside. If the wood is too wet, the heat must eliminate and evaporate the water before it can really heat the space. The moisture also causes build-up in the chimney, which could result in a house fire if not taken out.
